A Little About Coach Floyd!

Joel Floyd, the Oak Mountain Boys head basketball coach, is the driving force behind Oak Mountain Recreation Basketball. He generously dedicates his time and expertise to giving back to the community and fostering a vibrant basketball culture for the children of Oak Mountain. Prior to his role at Oak Mountain, Floyd served as the varsity assistant for the Spain Park High School Boys Basketball team from 2020-2022. During his time there, he contributed to all aspects of the program, from the weight room to the court. Under his guidance, Spain Park consistently ranked in the top 5 during the 2020-2021 season and even secured the number 1 spot multiple times. The team achieved a remarkable 27-8 record, making it to the Final Four in school history. The following season, Floyd’s leadership helped lead the Jags to another impressive 27-8 season and a second consecutive trip to the Final Four. In addition to his basketball expertise, Floyd also served as a Varsity Assistant Volleyball Coach at Spain Park, contributing to the team’s stellar 47-4 record, national #5 ranking, and 7A State Championship in 2021. Floyd’s coaching career began in 2007 at Pelham High School, where he started as an assistant coach. In 2009, he was promoted to head coach of the Pelham Panthers Boys Basketball team, leading the program to an impressive turnaround. In his inaugural season, the Panthers achieved their first 10-win season in over a decade. They continued to excel, reaching the Sub-Regionals playoff game for the first time since 1996 in the 2010-2011 season. The Panthers also achieved their first winning record in at least 20 years with a 17-12 record in the 2011-2012 season. Throughout his tenure at Pelham High School, Floyd’s dedication and leadership resulted in numerous accomplishments, including regular season Area Championships, the hosting of the Area Tournament, and back-to-back Regional appearances in 2016 and 2017. Under his guidance, the Panthers achieved their best record in school history, with a standout 23-8 record in the 2013-2014 season. Floyd also received recognition as the Birmingham News Shelby County and the Shelby County Reporter Coach of the Year for the 2013-2014 season. In his final season at Pelham in 2019, Floyd led the Panthers to the Sweet 16 once again. Prior to his coaching career, Floyd pursued his passion for sports as a student-athlete at Southeastern Community College, where he played baseball and basketball. Both programs were nationally ranked during his time there. He completed his college education at the University of Northern Iowa. With 20 years of experience as a teacher and coach, Floyd’s dedication and expertise continue to positively impact the lives of young athletes. He and his wife Stephanie have four children, Alyssa (22), Bailey (23), Blake (19), and Molly Bleu (16).

Our Mission

The OM Rec Basket Ball website aims to foster better basketball on Oak Mountain. Our league is designed exclusively for boys in 2nd-6th grades within the Oak Mountain school district / zone, providing them with an opportunity to participate in organized, semi-competitive basketball at an elevated level. It is our utmost priority to instill the fundamentals of basketball, nurture skill development, and foster confidence in our young players. We believe in imparting valuable life lessons by embracing both victories and defeats – a testament to the importance of sportsmanship. To celebrate the culmination of the season, we keep track of the teams’ records and conclude with an electrifying playoff to crown our deserving champions. Join us as we come together to build a thriving basketball community on the beautiful Oak Mountain!
